Our planet is drowning in plastic. Fortunately, the world has taken notice and national and local governments worldwide have taken action against plastic pollution.

Kenya, for example, banned the use, manufacture, and importation of all plastic bags for use in commercial and household packaging on 28 February 2017.

One of the major contributors to plastic pollution is plastic carrier bags, including your nylon produce bags.

A few facts:

  • A person uses a plastic carrier bag for an average of 12 minutes only. Then, it’ll take up to one thousand years to degrade. Nylon will take about 30-40 years to degrade.
  • Only one out of 200 plastic bags are recycled
  • Worldwide, over one million plastic bags are consumed in a minute, translating to 500 billion to one trillion annually.
  • 73% of beach litter is plastic, and grocery bags are among the most common plastic items.
  • Nylon produce bags contribute to climate change as their primary raw material is fossil fuels, which are responsible for 70% of the global Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.
  • Nylon is a synthetic fiber, releasing microplastics when its fibers breakdown, polluting our water systems and finding their way into our food and oceans.
  • A 2018 National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) study showed that more than 50% of cattle near urban areas had plastic bags in their stomachs.

Now that you know how plastic grocery bags are polluting our environment, let’s look at one alternative:

Characteristics of Cotton Mesh Produce Bags

Cotton mesh produce bags Kenya

Ecofriendly- Made of 100% organic cotton. Lack of plastic helps keep our wildlife and marine life safe, and reduces the chances of our drainage systems clogging during rainy seasons.

Recyclable and biodegradable – These bags are unbleached. They are also polyester, BPA, and nylon free. Additionally, no harmful chemicals are used in the production process.

Reusable- They can be reused several times, kept at home instead of being frequently discarded, unlike their single-use plastic counterparts.

Easy to clean-  Hand wash in cold water and hang or lay them flat to dry. They’re also machine-washable and quick to dry.

Multifunctional- In addition to grocery shopping, they’re great for carrying beach essentials, your laptop, and notebook for an outdoor Saturday read or being a simple toy bin for your kids.Ecofriendly grocery bag Kenya

Durable and sturdy- They’re double-stitched so you don’t have to worry about your bag tearing.  Ensure, however, that you don’t overload the bag. It can take about 7kgs.

Effective drawstring- You’ll only need to pull the drawstring once to secure your fruits and vegetables.

Lightweight-  The bags are lightweight, therefore easy to carry around.

See-through- The see-through mesh makes it easy for cashiers to verify everything in the bag without opening it.

Note: Since the bag is made of 100% cotton, expect some shrinkage after washing.

How To Take Care Of Your Cotton Mesh Produce Bag

Wash in cold water.

Give a good stretch after washing and hang to dry.

Avoid bleaching and hot tumble drying.
